The beginning of our very own<br \/>\nGirls Boarding School! After a lovely sojourn in Melbourne, Australia \u201cwith all<br \/>\nthe family\u201d and a few visitors, January saw us back in NZ as busy as bees.<br \/>\nWithin the timeframe of a few weeks, there was the convent to move, rooms to<br \/>\norganise for the boarders, a pile of paperwork to finish, classes to prepare<br \/>\nfor, cleaning to be done, the survival of Teachers week and Professional<br \/>\nDevelopment sessions, and of course, time for the Good Lord. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times, &quot;Times New Roman&quot;, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I don\u2019t know who was the more<br \/>\nnervous about our first meeting. Sisters or Boarders? But the 1<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><sup>st<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> of<br \/>\nFebruary finally came and it was on a warm Friday night at around 10:30pm that<br \/>\nwe heard a car pull up carrying within it our first boarders,&nbsp;one from<br \/>\nMalaysia, two from Singapore&nbsp;and one from Auckland, NZ. Allow me now to introduce them to you.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-5aTot90VM60\/UUaJV4qnVYI\/AAAAAAAADZ8\/u7Dg9nIYmN0\/s1600\/Signadou.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"428\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-5aTot90VM60\/UUaJV4qnVYI\/AAAAAAAADZ8\/u7Dg9nIYmN0\/s640\/Signadou.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\">First to step out of the car was<br \/>\nMaria Lim all the way over from Kualar Lumpar. Talented in many areas, she is a<br \/>\nwonderful Tupperware organiser and photographer, very respectful, studious and<br \/>\nobedient, plays the piano beautifully and always has a beautiful smile for you<br \/>\nwhenever you pass her.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-L_xv8-DVT5E\/UUaKc76uAHI\/AAAAAAAADaE\/jPQHcGKMEq8\/s1600\/DSC02514.JPG\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-L_xv8-DVT5E\/UUaKc76uAHI\/AAAAAAAADaE\/jPQHcGKMEq8\/s400\/DSC02514.JPG\" width=\"217\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\">Next were two shy little cousins,<br \/>\nfrom Singapore, although it turns out they are not so shy after all. Anne Rosa<br \/>\nLoo and Gertrude Yeo. Anne Rosa will have you in stitches as she tells you a<br \/>\nstory which really is quite serious but her mannerisms and accent make it so<br \/>\nenjoyable you can\u2019t help but laugh. Gertrude turned out to have a sweet nature,<br \/>\nlady-like ways and a soft spot for anything in a habit and veil. Both girls, we<br \/>\nfound out, also love to sing. Sometimes we come in from our refectory to hear<br \/>\ndishes being turned into a live musical like that of a scene in Beauty and the<br \/>\nBeast, particularly when a musical Sister is on boarding duty. Naturally we<br \/>\nhave a rule that once we come in for Matins, this has to stop otherwise their<br \/>\nvoices reverberate to the chapel.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-O1gKHoutQIk\/UUaK24fykcI\/AAAAAAAADaM\/3KTlPq-DST4\/s1600\/DSC02515.JPG\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-O1gKHoutQIk\/UUaK24fykcI\/AAAAAAAADaM\/3KTlPq-DST4\/s400\/DSC02515.JPG\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\">Finally there was the docile and<br \/>\never ready to please Monica Bennett sitting quietly in the back seat.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>A lover of song and dance also, Monica is a<br \/>\nlively addition to the dishes choir and has made remarkable progress since her<br \/>\nentrance. Coming from a home-schooling background, she has tackled the idea of<br \/>\ndifferent subjects and homework with sincerity, and has not let a broken arm,<br \/>\nsprained ankle or fall off a horse stand in the way of success.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-xuQoZEljdT0\/UUaLgGZ1cBI\/AAAAAAAADaU\/XYtm9h-03BI\/s1600\/DSC02516.JPG\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-xuQoZEljdT0\/UUaLgGZ1cBI\/AAAAAAAADaU\/XYtm9h-03BI\/s400\/DSC02516.JPG\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<o:p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><\/span>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\">And what of the Sisters? Well,<br \/>\nnervous at the prospect of a boarding house at first, we have found that it is<br \/>\nactually a very fruitful and enjoyable apostolate. Day by day we see the fruits<br \/>\nof our work. It is well worth it when you hear one of the girls say \u201c<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">I sin less here\u201d<\/i> or ask to sing Compline<br \/>\nwith us when it is not the day for it or hear them mention they want to be a<br \/>\nreligious when they grow up and fight over religious names. Our boarders are a<br \/>\ndelight and have become part of the family, filling the hole, literally and<br \/>\nmetaphorically, that was left earlier last year when our Novitiate House left<br \/>\nfor Australia. On Sunday, when boarders do attend Compline, old and young<br \/>\nvoices blend their voices together to sing the praises of the Lord. Normally it<br \/>\nwould be the novices that would break out into laughter if an honest mistake<br \/>\nhappened; now it is stifled giggles from the girls.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>At rosary time, it seems that every time you<br \/>\nlook up from your contemplation to check on the boarders, pairs of eyes are checking<br \/>\nYOU, watching your every move. Like the Dominican spirit, it is balanced &#8211;<br \/>\ncontemplation and action \u2013 Love of God and of neighbour \u2013a balance of prayer,<br \/>\nstudy, domestic activities and play.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\">During the week the girls rise at<br \/>\n6:30am every morning for Daily Mass, then follow the school schedule, after<br \/>\nwhich there is a little recreation and afternoon tea, followed by study hall.<br \/>\nTo rosary they go, then it is dinner, the dishes choir, then time for their own<br \/>\nmusic practice or free time, followed by recreation with one of the Sisters, and<br \/>\nfinally bed time with the many stuffed animals that seem to dominate the bed \u2013<br \/>\npigs, penguins, monkeys, dogs, you name it, we have it. Even a pink dinosaur<br \/>\nwas smuggled into the country and recently we were able to acquire lambs, a cat<br \/>\nand bears.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-xphyUuWHmcE\/UUaNIHtjxtI\/AAAAAAAADa0\/3a51PNXrP5s\/s1600\/teddy.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"478\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-xphyUuWHmcE\/UUaNIHtjxtI\/AAAAAAAADa0\/3a51PNXrP5s\/s640\/teddy.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Saturday morning is dedicated to<br \/>\ncleaning duties, learning the art of grocery shopping, as well as time for<br \/>\nstudy, finishing off homework or writing letters. Duties are assessed and<br \/>\npoints awarded accordingly: if you get a gold star for your efforts you are<br \/>\nsure to be in the running for a little reward. A green sticker on the other<br \/>\nhand will mean you are marched back up to tidy your room or spend more time on<br \/>\nyour cleaning duty. At present, in the afternoon, girls don their frilly aprons<br \/>\nand the house is filled with mouth-watering aromas as they learn the art of<br \/>\nbaking and taste testing. Needless to say it is quite a torture, particularly<br \/>\nduring Lent, as we go about our occupations with noses in the air and tongues<br \/>\nsafely locked away, unless of course you are a boarder and you get to taste<br \/>\nsome of your wares at afternoon tea time. Last week we learnt that one must NOT<br \/>\novermix the muffin mixture. The morning is spent resting and attending the Sung<br \/>\nHigh Mass. Girls are allowed to talk at breakfast, other days they do not. This year the day<br \/>\nbefore the Feast of the transferral of the body of St Catherine of Siena, we<br \/>\nreceived a beautiful big statue of the Saint that we are hoping will one day go<br \/>\nin our very own proper chapel. St Thomas Aquinas, our Dominican brother,<br \/>\nbrought us our very own Tenebrae Stand, for use during Holy Week. Dominican<br \/>\nRite of course. It was constructed by Brother Dominic\/Mr Guy Legrega, who is a<br \/>\nmember of the Third Order of Penance here in Wanganui and who was celebrating<br \/>\nhis first anniversary of Profession on this great Feast.<\/span><\/o:p><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\">May God continue to bless this<br \/>\napostolate and grant us many holy religious vocations.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;
