\nAs our readers know, the Dominican Sisters of
\nWanganui have recently celebrated their 10th anniversary, but few people know
\nthat there have been traditional Dominicans here in Wanganui for longer than
\nthis\u2014in fact nearly twenty years. In 1996, a year before Mother Micaela\u2019s
\narrival in Wanganui, Fr Gentili, as parish priest, was delegated by the Dominican
\nFriars of Avrille to receive the profession of Sister Mary Jacinta, the first
\ntraditional Dominican Tertiary of St Anthony\u2019s parish.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nSister Mary Jacinta, and now several others, are members of the \u201cThird Order of Penance,\u201d which numbers in its
\nranks many famous Dominicans, from St Catherine of Siena<\/st1:city>
\nand St Louis de Montfort to St Rose of Lima<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>
\nand St Martin de Porres. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\nWhile these famous four were vowed to chastity, many
\nTertiaries are married; the Third Order was established by St Dominic for lay
\npeople living in the world, who yet wished to participate in the apostolate of
\nhis friars by their prayers and by any material or apostolic help they could
\ngive. At first, for the men, this involved fighting in defence of the Church
\nand its property against Albigensian heretics, but later Tertiaries were more
\noften involved in corporal and spiritual works of mercy, like Blessed Albert of
\nVilla d’Ogna (d. 1279), a peasant who begged from door to door for alms for the
\nsick and poor and eventually built a hospice for their care. Blessed Jordan of
\nSaxony, the second Master General after St Dominic, was very active in encouraging
\nvocations to this as well as the first Order (the Friars), and defended the Tertiaries\u2019
\nrights as true Dominicans when many Friars thought they were more trouble than
\nthey were worth!<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\nTHE END OF THE ORDER<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u201cThe end of the Third Order is
\nthe sanctification of its own members by the practice of a more perfect
\nChristian life and the promotion of the salvation of souls in a way that is
\nsuitable to the state of the faithful living in the world.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nAs members of the Dominican Order, the Tertiaries
\nare supported by the prayers and merits of all its members, and their prayers
\nand penance in turn benefit the preaching work of the Friars, the teaching work
\nof the Sisters, and the sanctification of all the members, which is the primary
\npurpose of any religious order. They wear the scapular, the principal part of
\nour habit given us by Our Lady herself, and share in the special patronage it
\nsymbolises, whereby she is our \u201cshade from the heat, and from all dangers of
\nbody as well as of soul, in the hour of death, a bulwark and defence.\u201d Once a
\nmonth, they meet to pray together, to receive a short instruction on the rule
\nor the Dominican spirit, and, if they are erected into a fraternity, to receive
\nabsolution for their faults against the rule. The rule itself organises their
\nprayers, sacrifices and apostolate in a way that has stood the test of time and
\nled many souls to heaven. No wonder that Pope Benedict XV said, “Among the
\nmeans of holiness most useful and opportune for the defence and progress of
\nChristian faith and morals in our day, we recognize the Dominican Third Order
\nas one of the most eminent, easy, and secure.”<\/span><\/div>\n

\nTHE MEANS TO OBTAIN THE END: <\/span><\/span>PRAYER<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n

\n\u201cThe means
\nof obtaining this end, over and above the common precepts and duties of one\u2019s
\nstate in life, are: the observance of this Rule, continual prayer, and as far as
\npossible, liturgical prayer\u2026\u201d<\/o:p><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n


\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs sharers in our motto of \u201cContemplari et
\ncontemplata tradere,\u201d \u201cTo contemplate and hand on the fruits of their contemplation,\u201d
\nthe Tertiaries\u2019 first duty is to contemplate eternal truths. Priest-Tertiaries,
\nlike St Louis de Montfort, do this by their recitation of the breviary, the
\nDivine Office, but other Tertiaries share in the official prayer of the Church

\nTo give them more time to assimilate the rich
\nfood contained in the Psalms or the mysteries of the Rosary, the Tertiaries

\ndevotion for the souls in Purgatory by reciting the De Profundis for departed

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nLike St Dominic, who disciplined himself every
\nnight for his own sins and those of others, the members of the \u201cThird order of
\nPenance\u201d strive to mortify themselves and make hearty reparation for all
\noffences against God. While modern Tertiaries are dispensed from many of the
\nmore difficult prescriptions of the ancient rule, they adhere to its spirit
\nthrough fasting on Fridays throughout the year and on certain vigils, by
\navoiding worldly amusements and vanity in dress, and by other penances as
\nrecommended by their confessor.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span>

\n\u201cMindful
\nof the traditions of our ancestors, Tertiaries should labour in behalf of the
\ntruth of the Catholic Faith and for the Church and the Pope, in word and deed,
\nshowing themselves to be ardent defenders of their rights in all things and at
\nall times.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Tertiaries in Wanganui accomplish the
\nsecond half of their motto, \u201ccontemplata tradere,\u201d by helping in various ways around
\nthe parish; some are members of the Legion of Mary, which is excellent for
\ndirecting one\u2019s practice of the spiritual and, to a certain extent, the
\ncorporal works of mercy. They may help in any parish or Dominican apostolate;
\nthe constitutions especially suggest the teaching of catechism. Not everyone is
\ncalled to advise the Pope like St Catherine or to nurse the sick poor in the
\nbackyard like St Rose of Lima<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>,
\nbut all should do what they can to \u201cdevote
\ntheir lives to the glory of God and the salvation of their neighbour in an
\nardent and generous spirit.\u201d<\/i><\/span>  <\/span><\/span>

\nWhile it is helpful in the practice of the
\nrule to have an established \u201cfraternity,\u201d <\/span>or community of Tertiaries, for support, it is
\npossible to become a Dominican tertiary no matter where you are, and the
\nspiritual benefits are incalculable. We are happy to give any
\ninformation we can and encourage vocations, for as Pope Pius XII said:<\/span><\/span>

\n“We hope that the ranks of the Third Order
\nwill gather numerous young men and women who, without having a religious
\nvocation, aspire to a more perfect Christian life, who aspire to make a more
