line-height: 115%;\">This<br \/>\ninvitation to the campers in the flyer for New Zealand\u2019s Camp Kateri Tekakwitha<br \/>\nwas but the introduction to the life in the wilderness of the American<br \/>\nMissionaries into which the camp endeavoured to plunge girls for seven days.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<span lang=\"EN-NZ\" style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;\">The<br \/>\ngirls were to set out upon a grand adventure, covering nearly the length of the<br \/>\nNorth Island -1,782&nbsp;kilometres&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; line-height: 16.866666793823242px;\">traveled<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;\">&nbsp;to be exact &#8211; though this is not&nbsp;counting the numerous times the campers got lost and the ever increasing number<br \/>\nof U-turns<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<table align=\"center\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"margin-left: auto; Based<br \/>\nupon the lives of these heroic models, the camp determined to give the girls a<br \/>\ntaste of what life would have been like in the 17<sup>th<\/sup> &#8211; 19<sup>th<\/sup><br \/>\ncenturies, where the American Indians were still being converted by courageous<br \/>\nsouls. Of course, Our Lady was not left out, and since two of her feasts fell<br \/>\nduring the camp, it was providential that Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and<br \/>\nOur Lady of Guadalupe would be the object of camps&#8217; two-fold Marian &nbsp;devotion.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"background-color: yellow; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<i><span lang=\"EN-NZ\">\u201c\u2026In<br \/>\nteaching them (the Indians), remember that we have two powerful weapons.&nbsp; One is God\u2019s grace.&nbsp; The other is the example we set. We can teach<br \/>\nthe Indians kindness only by being kind. We can teach them goodness only by<br \/>\nbeing good ourselves. His remains are brought out for veneration only four times a<br \/>\nyear and we were blessed to be able to visit on one of these days. (Unfortunately, pictures were not allowed of girls in front of the Bishop\u2019s remains, but we took<br \/>\none outside instead.)<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span lang=\"EN-NZ\" style=\"font-family: &quot;Calibri&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;; line-height: 19.45pt;\">The Pinnacles is a famous hike in<br \/>\nthe North Island and was well worth the toil and sweat to reach the top.<\/span><span style=\"background-color: white; line-height: 19.45pt;\">&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"background-color: white; line-height: 19.45pt;\">As the <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 19.45pt;\">New<br \/>\nZealand Tramper<\/b><span style=\"background-color: white; line-height: 19.45pt;\"> aptly remarks: <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 19.45pt;\">\u201c The<br \/>\nPinnacles Track follows the old pack horse trails\u2026 over the river and up the<br \/>\nvalley to the Pinnacles hut\u2026 The track was used in the good old days to bring<br \/>\nsupplies up to the millers and tree fellers, who cleared out hundreds of acres<br \/>\nof kauri trees in the valleys. In the late 1990\u2019s, the track (which had become<br \/>\na bit scungy) was upgraded, and rebuilt,&nbsp;close to what&nbsp;it looked like<br \/>\nat the start of the century. The result is spectacular . . .&nbsp;&nbsp;stone<br \/>\nsteps {<\/i><span style=\"background-color: white; line-height: 19.45pt;\">big enough for giants\u2019 legs}, <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 19.45pt;\">wide<br \/>\nenough for packhorses, dominate most of the track, crossing the<br \/>\nriver&nbsp;three times as it rises steeply to logging camp at the<br \/>\n\u2018near\u2019 top. I warn you now \u2013 the stone stairs are great to look at but hard on<br \/>\nthe legs\u2026 <\/i><i style=\"line-height: 19.45pt;\"><span style=\"background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; font-size: 10.5pt;\">From<br \/>\nthe first swing-bridge, the stone stairs come into play \u2013 it will<br \/>\ntake&nbsp;1\u20131\u00bd&nbsp;hrs to leave them and get to the logging camp. It\u2019ll only take 45 minutes to<br \/>\nget to the top, but you go up some steep rock faces, and several ladders before<br \/>\nnegotiating a large boulder, to get to the narrow ledge at the top. From the<br \/>\ntop, you can see both sides of the Coromandel \u2013 Tairua \/ Pauanui on one side,<br \/>\nThe firth of Thames and Hauraki Plains on the other. It was made even more like North America when the girls had to climb out of their kayaks and drag them along at different stretches of shallow water in the river, making them reminisce about the missionaries having to carry or drag their boats for miles on end in between long sessions of boating down the river. Each evening, for the last talk of the day, the campers all assembled in their home-made Native American costumes, which made the theme of the camp feel all the more real.<o:p><\/o:p><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white;
