{"id":4919,"date":"2014-07-16T09:55:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-16T09:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opsisters.org.nz\/preview\/2014\/07\/16\/"},"modified":"2023-05-12T21:46:34","modified_gmt":"2023-05-12T21:46:34","slug":"4919","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opsisters.org.nz\/preview\/2014\/07\/16\/4919\/","title":{"rendered":"Rosary Convent Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">With an update<br \/>\nof Rosary Convent long overdue, we scarcely know where to begin the news<br \/>\nupdate; so we\u2019ll start at the beginning.<br \/>\nAfter all, it is a very good place to start.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">The first month<br \/>\nof 2014 was a very momentous one for us, for on January 6<sup>th<\/sup> we had<br \/>\nthe happiness of witnessing the entrance of postulants, the veiling of four Novices and the Temporary Profession of two of our Sisters.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Miss Elizabeth<br \/>\nSmith from Wanganui, NZ, entered in January, along with Miss Katie Corr from<br \/>\nSan Jose, California. The latter, due to visa restrictions, is at this present<br \/>\nmoment doing her postulancy in NZ and then God-willing, will resume her<br \/>\nCanonical year in the Motherhouse. Soon to follow and enter the convent were<br \/>\nMiss Genevieve Erbacher from Brisbane, Australia and Miss Mary Williams from St<br \/>\nMary\u2019s, Kansas. The following incident serves as a reminder to the<br \/>\nolder generation that we are living in a modern technological world.<\/span><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-AU\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><b>Postulant:<\/b>\u00a0(<i>Reading<br \/>\nlist of things to bring to the convent<\/i>): Bible \u2013 check, Missal \u2013 Check, Alarm<br \/>\nClock \u2013 Hmmm \u2013 I don\u2019t have an alarm clock.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><b>Sister: <\/b>Oh never<br \/>\nfear, we can always purchase one for you when you arrive.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><b>Postulant: <\/b>Oh I<br \/>\nalmost forgot, don\u2019t worry, I have one on my I-Phone<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><b>Sister: <\/b><i>(long<br \/>\npause)<\/i> Um, postulants are not allowed to have I-Phones<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\"><b>Postulant:<\/b> Oh my!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Really!<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Our four little<br \/>\nNovices, Sisters Dolores, Amata, Francis and Imelda are half way through their<br \/>\ncanonical year. Their time has been devoted to the Corporal Works of Mercy<br \/>\nwithin the community, namely, feeding the hungry, washing the clothes for those<br \/>\nin need! A good portion of course is dedicated to the<br \/>\nstudy of the Divine Office, the 3 Evangelical Vows, Dominican Spirituality, the<br \/>\nRule and Constitution, Latin, Music, the Summa and Prayer. Sisters Anna and Columba have been busy completing<br \/>\na Post Graduate Teaching Diploma as well as teaching Catechism at St Thomas<br \/>\nAquinas College while Sisters Jordan and Bernard have been completing a<br \/>\nBachelor of Arts through Tabor College, juggling religious life and school classes too!<br \/>\nThey have also been a great asset this year, fulfilling the offices of<br \/>\nInfirmarian, Chantress, Vestiarian, Sacristan and Assistant Fundraiser. Only<br \/>\njust recently, on a trip to complete an IELTS English Test for Teacher<br \/>\nRegistration, one of the Novices was approached by a lady interested in the<br \/>\nCatholic Faith. We are very pleased to announce that she now wishes to become a<br \/>\nCatechumen and is preparing herself for the Sacrament of Baptism. A young girl,<br \/>\nwho recently took up the offer of tutoring from one of the Sisters, is now preparing<br \/>\nfor three Sacraments within the next few months: Confession, Communion and<br \/>\nConfirmation. Please pray for these two souls, as well as for the Sisters just<br \/>\nmentioned, who are at this moment studying the Vow of Obedience, preparing for<br \/>\nthe day when they will solemnly and publicly give themselves wholly and<br \/>\nentirely to God by way of the three Evangelical Counsels. We are very much looking<br \/>\nforward to Dominican Rite Masses again and seeing our Sisters from NZ who will<br \/>\njoin us, as well as our Dominican male counterparts.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Our two<br \/>\nProfessed Sisters, Srs Johanna and Thomas, were not long together after their<br \/>\nTemporary Profession on January 6<sup>th<\/sup>. Sr Johanna, now O.P., was<br \/>\nassigned to NZ to teach Maths, look after the bursar work and study, while Sr<br \/>\nThomas O.P. was assigned to remain at the Motherhouse house to continue her<br \/>\nstudy in the Post Graduate Teaching Programme and teach at St Thomas Aquinas College.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">As for the<br \/>\nBuilding of the Motherhouse, this has become a number one necessity of late.<br \/>\nWith more ladies and a Sister on the way this year, and at least 3 Postulants<br \/>\nbooked in for next year, we have absolutely no room. It has become imperative<br \/>\ntherefore that we build at least half of our Motherhouse by January 2015. At<br \/>\npresent we have 16 living in a house which includes Sisters outside in cabins,<br \/>\none in a walk-in-wardrobe, some sharing rooms etc. This is what it looks like<br \/>\nin the morning when we all zone in for breakfast. As you can see, it is far<br \/>\nfrom ideal for a house of religious formation.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-YELnM1mnwnc\/U8X-TXKcm3I\/AAAAAAAAELk\/CpxzWru3C8Y\/s1600\/kitchenpicture.jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-YELnM1mnwnc\/U8X-TXKcm3I\/AAAAAAAAELk\/CpxzWru3C8Y\/s1600\/kitchenpicture.jpg.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"322\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Thankfully, a<br \/>\nkind parishioner donated a caravan and a spare vehicle which have proved very<br \/>\nvery handy indeed, although we do have a very funny tale to add here. New to<br \/>\nthe prospect of Caravens on our property, what was our utter astonishment one<br \/>\nmorning, when after carefully preparing it for a visitor, we found on going to<br \/>\nChapel the next morning that the Caraven had tilted. The occupant had turned<br \/>\nover in the night and the Caraven, not fastened to the ground, had moved with<br \/>\nher like a see-saw. What we saw in the morning was a hilariously funny sight,<br \/>\none end on the ground and one end high in the air: we wondered how the poor inhabitant<br \/>\nhad survived. She had; for during meditation we heard a huge thud. She had<br \/>\nawoken, moved, and with her came the Caraven. She came in for Mass as if<br \/>\nnothing out of the ordinary had happened. Needless to say, the Caraven is now<br \/>\nsecured firmly to the ground. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Since the<br \/>\nbeginning of the year, we have been busy trying to fundraise the necessary 1.5<br \/>\nmillion for at least half of the Motherhouse plan to be completed. What we have done is divided the whole plan into sizable portions so<br \/>\nbenefactors can then \u201csponsor\u201d a whole room ie: cell, office, parlour or part<br \/>\nof a room ie: kitchen, library, lecture room etc. Slots range in price and the<br \/>\nbenefactor has the opportunity of having their name on a plaque in our convent<br \/>\nso that they will always be remembered by the Sisters. The idea behind this fundraiser<br \/>\nis that many little contributions add up and if all do their little bit, our<br \/>\nMotherhouse would be a reality (hint, hint).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Almsgiving too is always rewarded abundantly by God (hint,<br \/>\nhint, hint) AND covereth a multitude of sins (hint, hint, hint, hint).
