{"id":2911,"date":"2021-08-22T11:18:01","date_gmt":"2021-08-21T23:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dominicansisters.net.nz\/?p=2911"},"modified":"2023-05-04T20:28:13","modified_gmt":"2023-05-04T20:28:13","slug":"school-life-at-st-dominics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opsisters.org.nz\/preview\/2021\/08\/22\/school-life-at-st-dominics\/","title":{"rendered":"School Life at St Dominic&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With the sudden notice of closure of school due to lock-downs all over the country, it might be apropos to take a brief look at what has happened the last few months in school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In July we received notice that one of our pupils had received 2<sup>nd<\/sup> place in the Creative section of the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand (SGCNZ) Ida Gaskin Shakespeare Essay Competition with English at Otago \u2013 our congratulations to Angelica Hickman of Form 4, who also received a cash prize of $150 for her short story.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opsisters.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/BusyBeesAug002-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2894\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Congratulations to Angelica whose short story won 2nd place.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Academic excellence is encouraged at St Dominic\u2019s, and the hard work of pupils who receive an average of 80% across all subjects in the examinations is recognised by the award of an academic tie. Earthworms, apparently! These little jars filled with earth, worms and some green things have been gracing the corridor of the school the last few weeks: mini eco-systems created by the Science class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our local firemen came to give the junior girls a presentation on their work \u2013 and how to put out a kitchen fire. These girls had made it through to the regionals, and had to bravely compete in front of a live audience to spell words out \u2013 orally, without pen and paper! \u2013 many of which they might not have heard of before. It actually is rather challenging to spell out loud without writing the letters down \u2013 try it yourself!
